Cartagena gives its submarine roundabout a fresh sea-inspired makeover
The revamped entrance now features blue turf and more than 1,500 white daisies
Cartagena has given one of its best-known entrances a new look, with the submarine roundabout on Paseo Alfonso XIII now transformed into a small seascape. The Cartagena Ayuntamiento, through its Parks and Gardens Department, has completed a full renovation of the roundabout, aiming to improve its appearance and create a smarter welcome for both residents and visitors. The design has been shaped around the submarine that sits at the centre of the roundabout, with the whole space now styled to reflect the sea. The old blue glass covering has been removed, the ground has been levelled with silica sand, and weed barrier fabric has been installed to help keep the area tidy and well maintained. On top of that, a layer of blue artificial turf has been laid, giving the space a clear marine feel.
The finishing touch comes from the planting work. More than 1,500 white daisies have been added to the landscaped areas, arranged so they resemble sea foam around the submarine. Together, the different elements create a visual scene that is meant to look like a stretch of water surrounding the vessel.
The Ayuntamiento says the work is part of its wider commitment to looking after public spaces and keeping key areas of the city in good condition. Paseo Alfonso XIII is one of Cartagena’s main access points, so officials want it to make a stronger first impression and project a more polished image of the city.

It is a simple change, but one that gives the roundabout a more distinctive identity. Instead of a plain traffic island, it now feels like a small nod to Cartagena’s maritime character, with the submarine at the centre and the blue-and-white planting designed to echo the sea. For people passing through the area, it should be a far more attractive sight than before.
