ARCHIVED - Cartagena promotes fishing traditions in primary education at local schools
Pupils will learn about the historical and economic importance of fishing to the city of Cartagena
The Town Hall of Cartagena is encouraging local children to learn more about the importance and techniques of the fishing fleet based at the port of Santa Lucía through an initiative named “Conoce la pesca del puerto de Santa Lucía de Cartagena”, which is being organized by the Murcia regional organization GALPEMUR and the company Equipo Funámbula.
Among the aims of the initiative, apart from making children aware of the historical and economic importance of fishing to Cartagena, are to encourage them to eat more fish and to help them to appreciate the ecological aspects of fishing grounds and of the marine environment as a whole. It is anticipated that the program will be incorporated into teaching and learning programs for pupils in the latter stages of primary education, aged between 10 and 12, and the materials will include 60 minutes of video showing all of the different elements of the port of Santa Lucía, as well as the Santa Florentina market and other locations associated with fishing in the city of Cartagena.
