ARCHIVED - Closure of Doncaster Sheffield Airport means UK will lose 10 flight connections to Spain
TUI flights to Mallorca, Alicante and Malaga will be affected when the Yorkshire airport shuts down in November

Doncaster Sheffield Airport in the UK is due to close this November as a result of a “fundamental lack of financial viability”, according to the airport owner Peel Group, meaning that the ten flight connections between the Yorkshire airport and Spain will be lost.
Currently, Doncaster Sheffield Airport, formerly known as Robin Hood Airport, has connections with Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, Alicante, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Tenerife, Reus, Girona and Malaga in Spain with the airline TUI.
It is not yet known whether, after the airport closes, these flight connections with Spain will be lost altogether or will be transferred to other nearby airports like Leeds Bradford International Airport and Humberside Airport.
While it is a relatively new airport, having only been opened on April 28, 2005, services at Doncaster Airport will begin to wind down from October 1, 2022, and its final service will operate on November 4.
Robert Hough, chairman of Peel Airports, admitted that this news would come as “a great disappointment to many”.
South Yorkshire’s mayor Oliver Coppard told the BBC he was “devastated” by the announcement and angry about the impact it will have on local communities, while TUI have said they are “incredibly disappointed” by the decision.
Unfortunately, it has been assessed to simply not be profitable enough to remain open, as the Peel Group has made clear.
“The intractable problem remains the fundamental and insufficient lack of current or prospective revenue streams, together with the airport’s high operating costs.”
The 800 or so people who work at the airport, which Peel described as their “biggest asset” will hopefully be found jobs elsewhere.
“We will do everything we can to minimise the impact of these proposals and work closely with local authorities and agencies to support our employees through what we know will be an extremely difficult period.”
