Costa del Sol town plans to use seawater for beach footbaths
Beach showers along Vélez-Málaga’s 22-kilometre coastline have been out of action for two years due to drought
After two consecutive summers without showers on the beaches of Vélez-Málaga, on the Costa del Sol, the town hall has requested permission from the Junta de Andalucía and the central government’s coastal department to use seawater to be able to open its foot wash showers.
In a statement released by the town hall last Wednesday, June 12, officials explained that they had submitted the request, describing it as “an initiative that we have been considering for a long time”.
Jesús Pérez Atencia, Deputy Mayor of Vélez-Málaga, emphasised the town hall’s concern about the optimal and efficient use of the limited water resources during this extreme drought.
The use of seawater for footbaths is not unprecedented, and the measure is already in place in parts of Valencia.
Earlier this month, the town hall announced that showers and footbaths will be operational at the six adapted beaches for people with reduced mobility this summer. Councillors have called for “responsible use” of these facilities.
