ARCHIVED - Covid incidence soars past national average: Murcia pandemic update October 4
The 14-day cumulative rate in the Murcia Region has now pushed past the 200-case barrier

The campaign to simultaneously roll out the flu jab and the fourth coronavirus vaccine in the Region of Murcia is said to be progressing “at a good rate,” with the health authorities confident that it will be possible to offer the influenza inoculation to the general population by mid-November.
As expected, the number of daily coronavirus infections has climbed again this week and the 14-day incidence rate is now more than 50 points above the Spanish national average. However, hospitalisations have taken another welcome downturn, albeit a very slight one.
Coronavirus infections
The Region of Murcia has registered a total of 407 cases of coronavirus in the latest update published on Monday October 3, a considerable upswing on the 188 infections reported five days ago.
This brings the overall number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 456,636.
Of the total cases, 84,942 have been diagnosed in people over the age of 60.
Cumulative incidence rate
The latest data provided by the regional health authorities on Monday show that the 7-day cumulative incidence rate has taken another leap, increasing from 101.20 cases per 100,000 inhabitants to 104.56. This up and down trend has dominated in the Region for the past few reports, with this weekly figure routinely losing and gaining a couple of points.
Unfortunately, the more important average incidence over a two-week period has also increased from 195.40 cases to 202.41.
The Spanish national average has registered a similar jump this week, increasing 8 points to 149.80 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
In this week’s report, the health authorities have only provided the data for people hospitalised in the Region as a direct result of coronavirus, rather than offering the number of people who have been admitted and are Covid-positive.
With this in mind, a slight improvement can be observed, as there are currently 36 people hospitalised because of Covid this week down from 37 last Wednesday.
The number of chronically ill patients being treated in intensive care follows a similar trend, dropping from three people to two.
Two more Covid-related fatalities have been registered, bringing the overall death toll since the start of the health crisis to 2,446.
Covid testing
The Region of Murcia has carried out 3,166,699 PCR and antigen coronavirus detection tests.
Vaccination data
According to Spanish Ministry of Health data, 94% of the entire population of the Murcia Region has had a least one dose. In addition, 93.60% of people are now double jabbed.
