ARCHIVED - Covid restrictions in Andalusia on New Years Eve
Mandatory masks and Covid passports are some of the measures in place in Andalucía
Andalucía, like the rest of Spain, has experienced soaring Covid infections over the past few days and faces New Year’s Eve at the very high risk level. However, despite reaching a 14-day cumulative incidence rate of 841 cases per 100,000 inhabitants on Tuesday December 28, the regional government has categorically ruled out imposing any additional restrictions before the start of 2022.
"There are no restrictions on the table like those of Catalonia, no curfew or measures as harsh as in other autonomous communities", the president of the region, Juanma Moreno, confirmed but instead called for common sense. In the absence of local measures, many of the Andalucían councils have chosen to cancel their New Year’s Eve parties to avoid crowds while the Three Kings parades also hang in the balance in many areas.
Amid the rising cases and the new threat presented by the Omicron variant, President Moreno has announced that he will be gathering the Committee of Experts on January 3 and 4 to “make some decisions” on safety measures going forward.
Currently, a Covid passport is required to access hospitality venues and all those aged six and over must wear a facemask while outdoors. A mask is also required for all interior spaces, including on public transport and in private cars, if passengers are from different households.
The Andalucían Government has recommended limiting festive meals to a maximum of two families and indoor tables to ten diners.
Speaking about the meetings scheduled for next week, Mr Moreno has reiterated that his aim is to “affect the economic and productive activity” of the community “as little as possible”.
