ARCHIVED - Cruel cockfighting ring dismantled in the Region of Murcia
40 birds have been rescued from a Murcia warehouse
A Guardia Civil investigation on Thursday January 20 led to the discovery of an illegal cockfight taking place in a warehouse in the Alquerías district of Murcia city.
Officers from the municipal police force accompanied the Guardia Civil to the location, where they raided the building and found approximately 50 people watching and placing bets on a cockfight. These cruel events are illegal in the Region of Murcia and disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against those involved.
The surviving birds found in the warehouse have been handed over to the Seprona (Wildlife Protection Services) branch of the Guardia Civil. Many of the roosters used in cockfights don’t make it as they are often left with fatal injuries. It is also common for the organisers to fit the birds with metal spurs to increase damage and to give them drugs to make them more aggressive.
Since 2015, the Spanish Penal Code has given out prison sentences for criminals responsible for forcing animals to fight, including dog fights and cockfights. It is likely that the organisers of this event will be charged with crimes of animal cruelty and receive prison time as well as a ban on working with animals.
Unfortunately, this barbaric practise is not uncommon throughout Spain, with the authorities finding cockfighting rings across the country, including in the Alicante municipality of Orihuela and the province of Seville in Andalucía.
