Dénia blue shark washes up dead
The Alicante beach was evacuated when the shark was spotted close to shore
Just 24 hours after a blue shark caused chaos on the Les Deveses beach in Dénia, the creature has sadly washed up dead on the nearby Els Molins beach.
The red flag was raised at around 1pm on Sunday September 22 when the animal, looking rather disorientated, was spotted swimming in the shallows near the popular Lamar Restaurant.
Video footage shows the shark paying no attention as a dog races into the surf, barking at it, and experts believe this shows it was already in a weakened state. In a desperate attempt to save the shark, lifeguards unsuccessfully attempted to herd it back out to sea.
However, it appears that the shark was already too ill to make the journey away from the coast and on Monday September 23, its lifeless body was dragged close to the shore at Els Molins. It was removed from the water and a post-mortem will presumably be carried out to determine the cause of death.
Blue sharks, a common enough sight along the Mediterranean coast, pose little danger to humans and usually only travel this close to shore because they are disorientated or in very poor health.
