ARCHIVED - Disorientated penguin makes rare appearance on a beach in Huelva
The penguin, which usually inhabits rocky islets and sea cliffs in the northern Atlantic, was suffering from malnutrition
A hungry and disorientated penguin has been rescued on a beach in Huelva having made an epic detour from its home in the northern Atlantic.
The seriously malnourished penguin was found on Mazagón beach in Palos de la Frontera on Tuesday April 25, and required veterinary assistance.
The Town Hall described the rare arrival as "curious", due to the high temperatures that have been recorded as Andalucia, like much of Spain, is experiencing its first heatwave of the year.
This species of European auk usually inhabits rocky islets and sea cliffs in the northern Atlantic, although they have been sighted in the area on a handful of occasions in the past.
The Local Police were the first to be alerted to the penguin in distress, and after capturing it, officers handed it over to the Fauna Clinic veterinary service, which is still caring for the bird to get it back to full strength.
