Estepona expat community president caught paying himself a salary of 86,700 euros
The neighbourhood head was getting paid more than the second vice president of the Spanish government
Residents of the Torre Bermeja urbanisation in Estepona have lodged a complaint with the courts after it was revealed the president of their community has been paying himself a princely salary of 86,700 euros for several years, for a job that’s usually done for free.
Incredibly, Stephen Hill’s annual pay packet is higher than the base salary of the second vice president of the Spanish government (84,600 euros) and that of a government minister (79,415 euros), and just 600 euros less that what the leader of the Junta de Andalucía, Juanma Moreno, makes.
In this case, the community statutes clearly state that “the position of president is free”. Hills got around this clause by making himself Urbanisation Manager and Administrator, a job role that “has never been approved by the community of owners,” according to the lawyer for the prosecution.
Not content with his hefty financial remuneration, it also transpired that the president had exempted himself from paying any community fees, meaning that he dodged around 6,000 euros over the years.
This is also in violation of the urbanisation rules and regulations.
Legal representatives of the owners highlighted the fact that this kind of financial fraud is extremely common all across Spain, but is being seen more and more often in high-volume expat areas like Málaga, since many foreign residents aren’t familiar with the property laws.
