Fire at Torrevieja Hospital leaves one person injured and forces evacuation
A patient was admitted to intensive care following the incident at the Alicante province hospital
A fire at Torrevieja Hospital on Friday afternoon, May 22, left one person injured with burns and several others suffering from smoke inhalation after flames broke out on the second floor of the building.
Emergency services were called to the hospital shortly before midday, with firefighters from Torrevieja and Orihuela rushing to the scene as the hospital activated its evacuation plan.
The second floor of the hospital was evacuated as crews worked to bring the fire under control.
According to health department sources, one person suffered burn injuries during the incident, while several others were affected by smoke inhalation. One of those affected was admitted to the intensive care unit for treatment.
Six hospital workers also required medical attention after assisting with evacuation and rescue efforts inside the building.
Firefighters remained at the scene throughout the afternoon tackling the blaze, with five emergency teams deployed from stations across the Vega Baja area.
At around 12.46pm, fire services confirmed the operation was still ongoing.
The authorities have not yet confirmed what caused the fire and an investigation is expected once the area has been made safe.
