Flight to Spain takes a tipsy turn as drunk Brit forces major detour
The Jet2 flight, destined for Tenerife, had to land in Ireland so the sloshed tourist could be removed
A flight to the sunny beaches of Tenerife was waylaid by an unexpected and very unwelcome detour last week, when a Jet2 plane travelling from Glasgow was forced to divert to Ireland.
Among the eager holidaymakers was one British man who, unfortunately, took the term “holiday spirit” a bit too literally. As the plane jetted towards Spain, the disruptive passenger, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, began causing a ruckus.
Fearing the safety of the other travellers and his cabin crew, the pilot made the decision to land in Shannon so the trouble-maker could be removed.
In a rather dramatic turn of events, the man was eventually handcuffed and dragged off the plane, his legs bound with what appeared to be a seatbelt.
A fellow passenger captured the unusual spectacle on camera, showing a half-dressed man being carried down the aisle by Gardai.
The video which is doing the rounds on social media was captioned “Tenerife then Ireland it is”.
A Garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí attached to Shannon Airport arrested a man, aged in his 20s following an incident on board an aircraft that diverted to Shannon Airport earlier this evening Wednesday 12th June, 2024 at approximately 5.30pm.
“Gardaí met the aircraft and arrested the man under the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, 1997. He is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
“Investigations are ongoing.”
A Jet2 spokesperson added: “We can confirm that flight LS155 from Glasgow to Tenerife has diverted to Shannon Airport this afternoon so that police could offload a disruptive passenger.”
