Foreign man detained for deliberately setting fire to Santiago Apóstol church in local district
Foreign national arrested after church fire in El Pozuelo, Granada

Firefighters and the Guardia Civil rushed to the scene shortly after the incident, which happened around 3.00pm when the suspect locked himself inside the church and set it alight. The fire caused serious damage to the building’s interior.
The Archdiocese of Granada released a statement expressing deep regret over what happened and said it “strongly condemns” the attack. They explained, “A person locked himself inside the church, intentionally causing significant material damage and harming Christian sentiments.”
It was also revealed that some people were hurt while trying to stop the damage, and the Archdiocese also took a moment to thank the Guardia Civil and firefighters for their quick response and bravery.
Church officials urged authorities to thoroughly investigate and act accordingly, saying that they are calling on “the competent authorities, to whom it is rightfully responsible, to clarify the facts and apply the law.”
The Guardia Civil have taken the suspect into custody and are currently looking into his motives.
