ARCHIVED - French woman, 22, dies after falling from rockface in Malaga
The tourist plunged almost 40 metres and hit her head on a rock
A 22-year-old French woman who was visiting Spain’s Costa del Sol on vacation has died after falling around 40 metres while rock climbing in El Chorro.
The fatal accident occurred at around 11.30am on Thursday April 20, and is the second such death to happen in the area since February.
El Chorro is a popular area for rock climbers, but can be dangerous, as demonstrated by the recent fatalities.
According to an eyewitness, the young woman fell while descending the ‘Escalera Suiza’ rockface and hit her head on a rock. The reasons for her fall are under investigation.
When emergency services and Guardia Civil mountain rescue specialists arrived, they couldn't do anything to save the young woman, and were only able to recover her body.
On February 11, another woman died while preparing to climb in ‘Lluvia de Asteroides’ area, a vertical route in El Chorro that is well known among climbers.
On that occasion, the woman died when a rock fell from above and struck her on the head.
