Fresh breakthrough brings hope to case of Irish teen missing in Spain
15-year-old Amy Fitzpatrick disappeared close to her Costa del Sol home in 2008
The Irish government is expecting the Spanish authorities to upgrade the disappearance of teenager Amy Fitzpatrick into a murder probe after a credible witness came forward to reveal the 15-year-old had fallen in with a dangerous crowd right before she vanished.
The child went missing as she was walking home near Calahonda in the Costa del Sol on January 1 of 2008 and not a trace of the teen has been discovered since.
The witness, who hasn’t been named, failed to come forward at the time of Amy’s disappearance but has now given an extensive statement to the Guardia Civil in Spain. In it he names several people the youngster was hanging around with when she vanished and claims she was most likely murdered by one of her undesirable acquaintances, most of whom were much older.
He also revealed that Spanish police admitted they should have treated Amy’s case as a possible murder inquiry from the start, rather than dismissing her as a missing person.
An Irish Government source said: “This information has been passed onto both the Spanish police and the Gardai.
“We believe it is significant and merits the case being upgraded to the murder probe.
“The homicide unit of the Guardia de Civil who are dealing with the case know about it.
“The new witness paints a detailed picture of Amy’s life in Spain and we all need to get to the bottom of the reason why she disappeared.
A full-scale murder investigation in Spain is the only way to get to the truth, the source believes, adding that the Gardai in Ireland are willing to assist their Spanish counterparts in any way they can.
