Child and adult injured and 2 horses die in stable blaze at Seville Fair
The fire started hours after a carriage horse collapsed and died in extreme heat at the annual April Fair in Seville
A blaze broke out at one of the stables during the Seville April Fair on Wednesday, killing two horses and injuring a young girl and an adult.
A large number of animals were inside the stable as flames tore through the enclosure, which was immediately evacuated, but sadly two didn't survive.
According to sources from Emergencias 112 Andalucía and Seville City Council, the incident took place at 11.50pm on Wednesday April 26.
More than 30 calls were received from witnesses reporting that some tents and boxes at the Seville fairgrounds, behind the Blas Infante metro stop, were on fire.
A fire crew, local and national police, and emergency medical services were quickly mobilised and managed to extinguish the blaze an hour later. The National Police has launched an investigation, but the fire is believed to have been accidental.
A young girl suffered bruising after being run over by one of the animals fleeing the burning stable. She was treated by the Red Cross at the scene before being taken to a nearby health centre for further check-ups. An adult was also hurt, although there are no further details.
Seville City Council issued the following statement in the wake of the tragedy: "Last night we suffered a tragic fire in the vicinity of the Feria. The rapid action of the public services has been key to quickly resolving this serious incident that resulted in the death of two animals and a girl injured by a blow. The top priority now is to find out the causes of the fire and take measures to prevent it from happening again."
The horrific blaze broke out just hours after a dehydrated carriage horse forced to work in 36-degree heat dropped dead at Seville Fair on Wednesday afternoon.
Heartbreaking images of the sick and dehydrated carriage horse collapsing and dying of suspected heat and overexertion were brought to light by the Party Against Animal Abuse (Pacma) and the Local Police.
Seville police are investigating the horse-drawn carriage owner for alleged animal abuse after a necropsy carried out by veterinarians determined that the horse had been poorly for an unspecified amount of time, and this illness had been aggravated by temperatures in the region of 36ºC.
Earlier in the week, a Spanish royal and niece to the King knocked a woman over with her horse, leaving her with a nasty sprain.
In May 2022, another horse died from an internal haemorrhage as a result of overexertion and high temperatures while taking part in Seville's famed April Fair.
And in 2018, an equine lost its life during the fair when its owner failed to feed or water the animal for the entire day.
