German tourist plunges to his death from Mallorca Cathedral

A German tourist has died after falling from the wall of the Cathedral of Santa María, La Seu, in Palma de Mallorca in the early hours of Wednesday June 5. The 45-year-old holidaymaker plunged from the Basilica into Plaza de Ses Voltes below.

According to local reports, the alarm was raised at around 2am by the production team of a movie currently being filmed in Palma de Mallorca. They found the man’s unresponsive body lying in the street and called the emergency services.

Within moments, two ambulances from SAMU 061 and a National Police patrol had arrived at the scene. The paramedics found the man in cardiorespiratory arrest and began to try and resuscitate him, but, after about 50 minutes of desperate attempts, they had no choice but to pronounce him dead.

The German tourist didn’t have any documentation on him so it took a while for the authorities to identify him, but eventually the deceased’s laptop bag and wallet were discovered on the wall that he fell from.

The Homicide Department of the National Scientific Police has now taken charge of the investigation and they will try to establish whether the holidaymaker’s death was an accident or a possible criminal act.

At the tail end of last month, a group of around 200 German tourists were involved in a mass brawl in the Arenal de Palma party resort of Mallorca.

The holidaymakers attacked police and bar staff after being thrown out of a pub and only scattered when officers fired shots into the air.
