ARCHIVED - Gerry The Monk Hutch plans new life in Spain if cleared of murder in Ireland
The infamous gang leader is facing 20 years for the Regency Hotel homicide after being tracked down in Spain in 2021
Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch has told prison guards that he plans to make a new life for himself in Spain if found not guilty of the Regency Hotel slaying by the Irish courts. The drug lord is currently standing trial for the 2016 massacre which resulted in 18 injuries at the famous Dublin hotel.
In an odd twist, fellow gang leader John Gilligan should be stepping in front of the Spanish courts on Monday April 17 on drug trafficking and illegal weapon possession charges, but his trial has been suspended as the authorities try to track down his son Darren.
The Monk still owns properties in the Costa del Sol and Lanzarote, and yearns for the relaxed way of life and the warm weather, according to his jailors, who have described him as a model prisoner despite his violent reputation.
“He has not given a minute’s trouble since he arrived,” a prison source said.
“He is very courteous and polite and keeps himself to himself.
“He has given little or nothing away about how he thinks the case has gone and what the verdict will be.
"The one thing he is adamant about is that he is innocent.
“He does not seem to be too bothered by the threats on his life by the Kinahan cartel and their cronies.
“The only thing he says is he will head back to Spain once he clears his name. He said that he loved life there and the good weather.”
Hutch fled to Lanzarote following the Regency shooting fearing retribution from the notorious Kinahan cartel, who reportedly sent hit men to Spain to track him down. The Monk was indeed traced to the Canary Islands so he drastically changed his appearance and moved to the Costa del Sol, where he hid out until he was arrested by Spanish police in 2021.
If convicted of the murders, Hutch will face a life sentence and 20 years behind bars.
