ARCHIVED - Granada hit by fourth magnitude 3-plus earthquake this month
The latest seismic movement with a 1.9 magnitude aftershock occurred in Santa Cruz del Comercio in Andalucia's Alhama region
Granada province has been rocked by yet another earthquake registering more than 3 degrees on the Richter scale, the fourth this month.
According to the National Geographic Institute (IGN), the quake was of magnitude 3.1 at 7km deep with its epicentre in the town of Santa Cruz del Comercio in the region of Alhama.
The seismic movement occurred at 4.32am on Wednesday morning, February 22, followed by an aftershock of lesser intensity (magnitude 1.9) three minutes later in exactly the same place.
Although no public calls were made to Andalucia's 112 emergency service, the earthquake was felt with intensity III in the municipalities of Alhama de Granada, Cacín, Láchar, Moraleda de Zafayona and Villanueva Mesía and with intensity II in Salar, Cijuela, Huétor Tájar, Jayena and Granada capital.
This is the fourth earthquake recorded this month in Granada province. The IGN reported a 3.0 magnitude earthquake with an epicentre in the Granada town of Zafarraya on February 2. Within a week, a further two quakes were recorded in La Puebla de Don Fadrique, the first registering 3.7 earthquake and the second with a magnitude of 3.6.
