Gunman fires shots in Marbella shopping centre

The Costa del Sol was once again the site of a shooting this Tuesday July 18, this time in Puerto Banús’s Cristamar shopping centre in Marbella.

Police have opened an investigation to find out what happened and try to locate the suspect, who fired an assault weapon twice in the shopping mall.

The Emergency Service 112 Andalusia received several calls about 6pm from witnesses who warned that there had been a shooting in a restaurant located in the vicinity of the mall, on the Avenida de las Naciones, and that the shooter had fled.

National Police and Guardia Civil officers were immediately called to the scene, though an ambulance which was at first called was later not needed as no one was injured.

So far, no arrests have been made, but official sources say the suspect is said to be a man who was wearing a red T-shirt at the time. It is not known if he was alone or with more people, although some witnesses said there were two people.

Spanish media sources say that shortly after the shooting, the vehicle the suspect sped away in, a BMW X3 that had motorcycle license plates on it, was found engulfed in flames in Marbella’s Calle Londres, 5km from the site of the shooting.

This burning car could also be related to a forest fire which broke out in Marbella and in which firefighters are using up to six aircraft to try to put out.

Last September, there was another shootout in Marbella which left a 24-year-old Irishman seriously injured.
