ARCHIVED - Hitmen accused of murdering British businessman in Spain released on bail
The British contract killers shot their rival outside his Costa del Sol villa
British gang members Aaron Asquith, 25, and Edward Taylor, 39, have been released on bail by the Spanish courts despite being charged with the 2019 hit on British businessman Andrew Williamson.
The pair flew to Spain on November 21 with the sole “objective and aim of ending the life” of the 39-year-old Greater Manchester man and reportedly shot the father of two as he was leaving his luxury Costa del Sol villa. Prosecutors believe Asquith fired the kill shot from a 9mm pistol while sitting in his Audi, as Taylor waited a short distance away in a getaway car.
Eight shots were fired in all and Williamson, who was known as ‘Snaggle’ died instantly.
The hitmen were arrested by the Spanish authorities in 2020 and have been awaiting their fate behind bars.
However, despite the serious charges, both men have now been released pending trial. They have had to surrender their passports and will need to sign in with the courts every two weeks.
They have both been charged with murder and unlawful weapons possession, although the gun used in the gangland slaying has never been found. According to the indictment, Williamson was killed as part of an ongoing feud between rival drug gangs.
It adds: “[They had a] clear interest in finalising the preparations needed to end his life as well as obtaining the weapon they would use to do so.
“The attack was sudden and left the victim with no possibility whatsoever to defend himself.”
A few weeks ago, six UK citizens were arrested in Marbella in relation to an attempted hit on three well-known Irish criminals.
