Horse collapse and brutal beating sparks outrage on the Costa del Sol
The animal collapsed while ferrying tourists around Malaga at the height of the afternoon
A disturbing incident on the sun-kissed streets of Fuengirola in Malaga has left animal lovers and tourists alike in shock. A horse, used to ferry visitors around the popular resort town in a carriage, collapsed on the seafront, sparking a heated debate about the welfare of animals used in the tourism industry.
Eyewitnesses watched the scene in horror as the horse suddenly collapsed under the weight of its carriage and passengers. But what happened next is even more shocking.
The driver, instead of showing concern for the animal’s well-being, allegedly screamed at the horse and punched it in the face.
The incident took place on the afternoon of Tuesday September 17, when the temperature was around 23ºC.
One upset bystander wrote on Facebook: “I just witnessed a horse collapse on the promenade road by the harbour. They were rinsing the poor animal off shouting at it. They then dragged it out and punched it in the face to get it up. It’s disgusting and disturbing. People just stood there watching. It’s horrific.”
This incident is just the latest in a string of disturbing reports about the mistreatment of animals used in the tourism industry on the Costa del Sol. In recent weeks, protesters have been calling for action to protect donkeys and horses forced to work in unbearable heat, often with little rest or care.
Last month, a tourist was attacked by a donkey taxi driver in the Malaga resort of Mijas when he was caught filming the exhausted animal. According to the Animal Rights Party PACMA, who posted the footage online, the very same taxi driver verbally abused and threatened a member of their group just days earlier.
