IN PICTURES: Blue whale washes ashore on beach in Cádiz
The large animal was found in the early hours of the morning by local residents
The town of Rota in Cádiz woke up this Monday morning, January 20, to a big surprise, as they have found a blue whale washed up on the shore of the Playa del Chorrillo beach. The whale arrived upon the beach dead and with signs that it had already begun to decompose.
The event has surprised many in the town, although on Saturday afternoon, January 18, the Police sent a notice around to various towns warning of the possibilities of a whale arriving on a beach after it had been sighted floating dead in the sea.
Beach workers, alongside José Antonio Medina, quickly arrived on the scene this Monday morning to begin to cut up the body in order to facilitate their work of transferring it to a plot of land where they will proceed to dispose of it.
The people who work on the beach notified the neighbours of the whale’s body this morning before contacting 112 and the Centre for the Recovery of Endangered Species (CREAS).
The CREAS is a network whose aim is to recover disabled specimens of endangered and protected species and return them to the wild. In such cases as today it is protocol to contact the organisation.
