ARCHIVED - Incidence rate goes back up for first time in nearly a week: Andalusia Covid update January 17
After falling for six days straight, the 14-day rate in Andalucía has gone back up over the last 48 hours
14-day incidence rate in Andalucía since March 2020
After almost a week of a continuous downward trend in the cumulative incidence rate in Andalucía, the data for Sunday and Monday show a slight rebound up to 1,473.5 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and 16,498 new cases.
It should be remembered, though, that these data released on a Monday give the latest figures for the previous two days, so the average is only around 8,000 new cases a day – lower than the daily rate seen over the rest of last week. At the same time, it’s true that there are also fewer people testing and reporting symptoms on a Sunday than any other day of the week, which can skew the data.
New infections
The latest Covid data for Andalucía to be released on Monday January 17 showed a total of 16,498 cases of coronavirus infection across Sunday and Monday, a figure higher than the 10,886 cases recorded on Saturday.
The 16,498 infections over the last 48 hours follow 10,886 on Saturday, 14,002 on Friday, 11,177 on Thursday, 11,565 on Wednesday, 8,510 on Tuesday and 11,588 last Monday.
By provinces, Málaga is the one with the most reported positive cases with 3,558, followed by Sevilla with 3,201, Almería with 2,354, Granada with 2,087, Cádiz with 1,873, Córdoba with 1,241, Jaén with 1,109 and Huelva with 1,075.
Cumulative incidence rate
According to data provided by the Ministry of Health and Families in the report on the daily evolution of the coronavirus in the community, the cumulative incidence rate for the last 14 days has risen again after spending six days going down. It now stands at 1,473.5 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, 47.2 points higher than on Saturday.
Hospitalisations
Andalucía has 1,822 hospitalised patients with coronavirus after dropping by 22 in the last 48 hours, although the number of patients in the ICU has risen by nine to 244.
The Ministry has assured that the cumulative incidence is currently in a stable “plateau” phase, so that the important thing is the pressure of care, and recalled that the percentage of ICU beds occupied by coronavirus patients is 13% compared to 23% nationally, which is "a good performance within the malignancy" of the virus.
Deaths
In the last 48 hours, 11 people died from Covid, three more than those recorded on Saturday less than half of the number of people dying daily in the middle of last week.
Of the 11 deaths, seven were in Córdoba, two in Málaga and one each in the provinces of Almería and Cádiz.
Vaccinations
With regard to vaccinations, the Andalusian Regional Government is opening the third dose vaccination today to the 46-49 age group, who can already make an appointment online or at their health centre, and next Wednesday will extend the booster shot to those aged 40-45.
The Ministry for Health has also called on people aged 50-60 to get their third shot, as there is seemingly a greater reluctance to get a booster jab amongst people of this age group. 87% of those over 60 have already had the third vaccine.
As for children, the vaccination programme “is going very well” in the 5 to 11 age group, as 53% have already been vaccinated.
