Irish man found dead in Costa del Sol jail cell
The 30-year-old was arrested in Torremolinos on suspicion of domestic abuse
An investigation is underway after an Irishman was found dead in a police cell on the Costa del Sol. The 30-year-old man was being held on suspicion of domestic violence and was due to appear in court when the alarm was raised on Friday morning, March 15.
According to local reports, the man was discovered unresponsive in his cell during routine checks by officers at a National Police station in Torremolinos. Despite receiving medical attention, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
It’s understood that the man was confined to a cell in a “state of agitation” while waiting to appear in front of a judge, who was due to decide whether to release him on bail or remand him in custody.
Preliminary autopsy results suggest that the cause of death was pulmonary oedema, a condition characterised by excess fluid in the lungs, making it difficult to breathe. While heart problems are typically the cause, other factors such as exposure to toxins, high-altitude exercise and chest trauma can also contribute to the development of pulmonary oedema.
Toxicology tests are currently underway on tissue samples sent to a specialist laboratory in Sevilla to determine the origin of the pulmonary oedema. Officers involved in the arrest and those responsible for the man’s care while in custody are expected to be questioned as part of a formal investigation led by an investigating judge.
The identity of the deceased has not been officially released, and it remains unclear whether he was an expatriate living in the area or visiting on holiday. No further details regarding the circumstances surrounding his detention have been disclosed at this time.
Police officials are expected to issue a statement in the coming days as the investigation continues.
