ARCHIVED - Irishman kicked to death on popular tourist beach in Malaga, Spain
A 37-year-old man has been arrested for the murder of a homeless man who tried to prevent his belongings from being stolen
A homeless man in his 40s, originally from Cork, Ireland, has been found kicked to death on the Playa La Malagueta beach in Malaga, Spain.
The man was found by a jogger, who spotted the body lying on the beach at around 6.30am, surrounded by blood on the sand. The incident happened on March 12, but details of the Irishman’s nationality are only emerging now.
According to police, the man had been sleeping on La Malagueta beach, which is a busy tourist area during the daytime and at night is a gathering point for homeless people to sleep.
During that night, Malaga police had received reports of shouting and cries for help from the beach. Apparently, the man had attempted to stop someone from stealing his belongings while he was sleeping on the beach, and the thief had punched and kicked him until he died.
He sustained such severe head injuries that police officers initially thought he had been hit with a rock, but the postmortem revealed that he had been subjected to vicious blows with hands and feet.
He was identified as a local homeless man by staff at a supermarket near the beach, who had seen him around. Documentation found among his belongings indicated he was from Ireland, but the authorities in Spain had to submit his fingerprints to Interpol before receiving positive confirmation of his identity.
A 37-year-old man was arrested at his home around 7pm that same evening on suspicion of murder. It is believed police tracked him via CCTV footage and recovered clothing covered in the blood of his victim. The suspect appeared before a judge three days later.
Spanish police are currently attempting to contact relatives in a bid to repatriate the remains of the deceased.
