On Wednesday 16th July Jazz San Javier is honoured and thrilled to welcome back to its stage the legendary pianist Kenny Barron, one of the most influential pianists in the history of jazz and recipient of the festival's award in 2022. A leading figure in the tradition of be-bop on the piano, he has worked with countless top-tier musicians including Stan Getz, Chet Baker, Buddy Rich, Dizzy Gillespie, Freddie Hubbard, Stanley Turrentine, Milt Jackson, and Yusef Lateef.
Considered by many as the best living jazz pianist and a true master of the piano trio art, he returns with his brilliant trio composed of Kiyoshi Kitagawa on bass and Johnathan Blake on drums, with a special guest, vocalist Tyreek McDole, winner of the first prize at The Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition in 2023. McDole possesses a beautiful baritone voice in the style of Billy Eckstine, Joe Williams or Will Downing, and is one of the emerging stars in the new wave of American jazz.
Line-up
Kenny Barron: piano
Kiyoshi Kitagawa: double bass
Johnathan Blake: drums
Tyreek McDole: vocals
Following the interval Jazz San Javier welcomes Judith Hill, whose impressive work includes collaborations with none other than Michael Jackson (during his final tour) and Prince, who took her under his wing during the last two years of his life, producing her first album "Back in Time". She has been a regular backup singer for artists such as Stevie Wonder, George Benson, and Chaka Khan, and has also occasionally sung for Gregg Allman, Carole King, Rod Stewart, Barry Manilow and Robbie Williams.
Performing alone, she is an excellent pianist and guitarist with a voice that moves the soul, and her five albums, the latest being "Letters from a Black Widow" (2024), have established her as an original songwriter. Her first visit to the San Javier Jazz Festival is eagerly awaited!
