Around 7,000 people have been forced to leave their homes and more than 1,500 buildings have been destroyed

Following the collapse of the north face of the Cumbre Vieja volcano cone last weekend, the lava flow has decimated 680 hectares of land on the Canary Island, destroying 1,548 buildings, schools and homes. On Thursday October 14 a further 300 residents were evacuated between La Laguna and Tazacorte, taking the number of precautionary evacuations since Tuesday to three. On Wednesday night, 25 families had to leave their homes in the neighbourhood of Los Llanos de Aridane, while a further 700 were moved to safety the day before.

In total, around 7,000 people have been evacuated since the La Palma volcano erupted almost four weeks ago on September 19, and data collected by scientists on the emissions of sulfur dioxide show that the ordeal is far from over. Yesterday, the main lava path overflowed to create a secondary flow, while more than 50 earthquakes were experienced in just one morning, the largest of which measured 4.5 on the Richter scale and was the strongest tremor since the initial eruption.

The new stream is moving very slowly on its path to the sea and doesn’t pose an immediate risk but air quality remains a constant concern, with meteorological experts predicting the situation will escalate due to the imminent arrival of a Saharan air mass over the island.

Meanwhile, a tanker arrived on La Palma on Thursday to deliver much-needed irrigation to the farmers whose crops have been smothered by the ash cloud. The flow will be added to the two desalination plants being installed in Puerto Naos after two pipes were burst during the eruption, leaving huge numbers of banana crops without water.

The Red Cross has also begun distributing the 3.3 million euros allocated to those affected by the volcanic eruption, while the NGO continues to work on short, medium and long-term projects to support the victims of the natural disaster. Some 3,350,896 euros have been raised and will be allocated in the coming days, with priority given to families that include children and elderly relatives.

For now, all airports on the Canary Islands remain operational, but AENA has advised anyone planning to travel to check the status of their flight beforehand.
