ARCHIVED - Lorca asks for public input on the restoration of the prison building
The future of the Lorca prison will be decided through public participation
Lorca City Council is seeking input from the general public on what should be done to renovate and rehabilitate the old prison and the historic site surrounding it. A plan has already been developed to request funds from the European Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan but before this, the councillor for the Historic District, María Ángeles Mazuecos, wants to open up “a participatory process” to “collect ideas and opinions” from citizens.
Ms Mazuecos added that “the recovery and enhancement of the Historic and Monumental Centre of the city of Lorca is a primary and absolutely necessary action to be able to place our city in the best conditions and, therefore, at present, is working on the development of the Master Plan for the recovery of the historic site of the city of Lorca.”
Originally built in 1742 as a warehouse for farmers, the two-storey jail was expanded during the reigns of Fernando VI and Carlos III. Its expansive facade is decorated with commemorative tombstones but the iconic building itself has fallen into disrepair and requires urgent restorative work.
Those interested in volunteering their opinions about the future use of the prison can do so through the Lorca Participa website at: https://participa.lorca.es/encuestas
Alternatively, the Department of the Historic District has set up a dedicated Facebook profile where residents can keep up with the developments.
There are many different projects under development in the municipality, but the councillor explained that the restoration of buildings and important monuments is at the forefront.
“Through the European Union and the Next Generation funds, Lorca has the opportunity to participate in the Program to Promote the Rehabilitation of Public Buildings (PIREP) and due to the importance for our municipality, one of the projects with which it intends to participate is for the comprehensive restoration of Pósito Alto (La Cárcel).”
