Lorca gives out portable ashtrays to tackle cigarette butt littering
It is part of a campaign to promote cleaner streets
The Lorca City Council, in collaboration with the Ávora Association and the Región de Murcia Limpia Association, has launched an innovative campaign to combat litter caused by cigarette butts.
As part of the initiative, titled ‘Depende de todos’, 1,000 reusable portable ashtrays will be distributed to smokers to encourage proper disposal of cigarette waste.
The awareness campaign kicks off on Thursday December 5, during the Christmas market on Calle Corredera. Environmental educators, easily identifiable for the occasion, will provide information to smokers about the proper disposal of cigarette butts.
Hostelor, the Association of Hoteliers of Lorca, is also supporting the effort by assisting with outreach at outdoor terraces, helping to prevent litter in public spaces.
Juan Miguel Bayonas, Councillor for Urban Quality, emphasised the importance of the initiative: “With a small gesture, such as not throwing cigarette butts on the ground, we contribute to keeping Lorca clean. From the City Council, we are working to provide citizens with the necessary means and information to avoid waste on our streets.”
The portable ashtrays, designed to be reused, align with broader environmental goals, such as the EU’s Single-Use Plastics Directive and Spain’s Law on Waste and Contaminated Land for a Circular Economy. Once discarded, these ashtrays should be placed in the yellow recycling bins for light plastic packaging.
Ávora and Región de Murcia Limpia have collaborated extensively to promote sustainable practices across Spanish municipalities. Through this campaign, Lorca joins other cities taking proactive steps this Christmas to raise awareness about the environmental impact of littering.
The campaign highlights the value of individual actions in addressing waste, marking a step forward for Lorca in the fight against litter and towards a cleaner urban environment.
