Los Alcázares proposes common front for the removal of mud and seaweed from the Mar Menor
Mayor Mario Pérez Cervera leads an initiative to unite the four Town Halls affected in combating the duckweed in the lagoon
The accumulation of algae is a problem which affects water quality in many areas of the Mar Menor, and at the latest meeting of the multi-municipal committee for the health of the lagoon the Mayor of Los Alcázares, Mario Pérez Cervera, stressed the need to join forces with other administrations to design a single plan of action to provide a satisfactory solution.
In Los Alcázares the beaches most affected at the moment are those of Playa La Concha and Playa Carrión.
Having offered to discuss the matter with other authorities, this Wednesday Sr Pérez Cervera met the Director General of the Mar Menor, Víctor Serrano, and the General Secretary of the regional government Department of the Environment and the Mar Menor, Enrique Ujaldón, accompanied by local Councillor, María José Díaz Aragón, to discuss preliminary studies made into the situation with the help of the University of Alicante, with a view to submitting a proposal to the Department of Coasts and the Natural Environment, the aim being to reach a consensus as soon as possible.
Other matters raised during the meeting included the presence of jellyfish in the lagoon and the removal of surplus biomass, particularly the duckweed which drifts towards the shore, but the main thrust of discussions was for the four municipalities concerned (Los Alcázares, San Javier, Cartagena and San Pedro del Pinatar) to join forces and ensure that they are all working towards the same goal in a coordinated fashion.
