Major €1.2 million road project finally gets underway in Orihuela Costa
The massive overhaul of one of Campoamor’s busiest roads will pause during summer to reduce disruption

One of Campoamor’s busiest and most important roads is finally getting a major overhaul, with work now officially underway on a €1.2 million redevelopment project in Orihuela Costa.
Miguel de Cervantes Avenue, which serves as one of the main access routes into Campoamor, is set for a full transformation over the coming months, including new pavements, resurfaced roads, upgraded lighting, safer pedestrian crossings and a completely revamped drinking water network.
Local residents have complained for years about the condition of the area, particularly the ageing water infrastructure and worn road surfaces, and Orihuela City Council is now presenting the project as one of the flagship investments of the current term.
Mayor Pepe Vegara joined councillors Víctor Valverde and Manuel Mestre in Campoamor this week to officially present the start of the works, alongside local representatives from the area.
According to the council, almost €1 million of the budget will go towards rebuilding and modernising the avenue itself, with a further €260,000 earmarked for replacing the old water supply network underneath it.
Infrastructure councillor Víctor Valverde explained that the council decided it made little sense to renovate the road without also tackling the ageing pipes below the surface, which had already started causing problems in the area.
The works will include improved accessibility, upgraded street lighting and illuminated pedestrian signage designed to improve safety along the busy route. One of the biggest changes will be the redesign of the roundabout at the junction with Calle Saavedra Fajardo, which officials believe will improve traffic flow and reduce safety issues.
Council officials were keen to reassure residents and business owners worried about disruption during the busy summer months. Valverde explained that construction work will pause at the end of June before restarting in September to avoid affecting the peak tourist season in Orihuela Costa.
Coast councillor Manuel Mestre described the project as “long overdue” and linked it to a wider programme of improvements currently being rolled out across the coast, including upgrades to Aguamarina promenade, new lighting along coastal walkways and recent works in other residential areas.
The council has also hinted at more projects on the way, including improvements to Avenida de Villamartín and plans for new pedestrian walkways beneath the N-332.
