Malaga extends beach high season to 8 months, from March to October
The Costa del Sol Council will begin maintenance work on the beaches on March 1
Malaga City Council has decided to extend the high season for the maintenance service of beach equipment from March to October, effectively covering eight months of the year. This means that the low season, previously known as the medium season, will now only span from November to February.
Starting from March 1, around thirty people will be responsible for carrying out various tasks related to the conservation of public toilets, walkways, railings, showers and other beach facilities. This expansion of the service is aimed at keeping the beaches ready throughout the year, so that locals and tourists can continue to enjoy them and so that any damage caused by storms or vandalism can be quickly addressed.
The decision to extend the high season comes after the local government board approved a tender for the maintenance service for beach equipment for a period of three years, with an annual budget of 1,149,999.95 euros. The increased funding will cover the additional costs required for the expanded service, which will now run throughout the year.
Under the new arrangement, the concessionaire company will need to maintain a staff of at least 29 people during the high season months, including managers, technicians, officers, machinists, labourers and gardeners. This team will be responsible for carrying out maintenance work before and at the end of the summer season, as well as corrective and preventive maintenance throughout the year.
Malaga's beaches have consistently maintained high standards, having received several awards and certifications, including seven Blue Flags, seven 'Q's of Tourism Quality and Universal Accessibility, seven 'Safe Tourism Certified', awarded by the Institute for Tourism Quality of Spain, and three Ecoplayas.
The seven beaches that have received Blue Flags and 'Q' for Quality are San Andrés, La Caleta, El Palo, El Dedo, La Misericordia, La Malagueta, and Pedregalejo. The Ecoplayas flag also flies in these last three.
