Malaga pushes for year-round New York connection
At the moment, flights between the Costa del Sol and the Big Apple only run during the summer
The acting Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, Héctor Gómez, has expressed the Andalucia government’s willingness to extend the direct flight between Malaga and New York, which resumed this summer, so that it operates year-round.
Last year, the Costa del Sol beat off stiff competition from Seville to secure the connection with the Big Apple, and Mr Gómez is keen to make Malaga a “reference destination” for tourists from North America.
The minister has conceded that tourism in Malaga “is going very well, but it needs the support of the administrations, the central, regional and local governments.”
On the other hand, he said that relations between Andalucia and President Biden “are very good and in that direction we have a long way to go.”
He also alluded to the fact that large travel companies like Turespaña and even the Secretary of State for Tourism himself are eager to extend the New York flights so that they won’t always be seasonal.
Tourism numbers, particularly the number of overnight stays, have skyrocketed in the Costa del Sol this year, surpassing 2019’s pre-pandemic figures, but Malaga isn’t the only city in demand, since the Spanish Tourism Ministry is confident that a new connection will be up and running between the Valencian Community and New York by next summer.
In any case, the minister has described the forecasts for the remainder of 2023 and for next year as “extraordinary”, both in terms of the amount of international air seats available and domestic schedules on offer.
Minister Gómez concluded his statement by confirming that Malaga “is demonstrating its strength as a very important destination, and it is not unreasonable to think, say and affirm that tourism is the sector that is pulling a lot of the economy in our country and also in Andalucia and Malaga.”
