Malaga town cuts off water supply for 18 hours a day
Almost 400,000 Costa del Sol residents have been subjected to water restrictions this summer
The municipality of Casabermeja, home to 4,000 residents and situated close to the capital of Malaga, has become the latest town to increase water restrictions as heatwaves continue to drain Andalucia’s reservoirs dry.
For the past two weeks or so, Casabermeja town hall has been cutting off running water at night to conserve supplies but as of Tuesday July 11, homes and businesses will only have access to tap water for six hours each day, generally between 2pm and 8pm.
In addition, mayor Antonio Artacho has confirmed that a well will be opened up in Antequera and that tanker trucks will top up the water supply from this week.
At this point, around 400,000 people living in Malaga are subject to some kind of restriction as the persistent drought keeps the province’s reservoirs at 30% capacity.
In the last few days, the popular holiday destination of Benalmádena decided to reduce street washing by 35% and the irrigation of parks and gardens by 10%. Later this week automatic beach showers will also be modified so that they switch off sooner, which should save around 330,000 litres of water per week.
In coastal areas with a high influx of summer visitors such as Rincón de la Victoria and Algarrobo, beach showers have been shut off altogether and inland, Moclinejo has decided to cut off the general water supplies between midnight and just before dawn.
The first steps to save Malaga were taken by towns such as Almáchar or Cómpeta but since then, dozens more such as Vélez-Málaga, Algarrobo, Iznate, Benamargosa, Moclinejo and El Borge have implemented their own preventative measures.
