ARCHIVED - Malaga doctors express concern over rising Covid hospitalisations
Hospitalisations caused by the fifth wave in Andalusia are beginning to worry some medical staff in Málaga
The Medical Syndicate in Málaga (SMM) has expressed concern over the rising number of Covid cases and hospitalisations in the region, especially in the city of Málaga.
The current epidemiological situation in Andalusia, with over 1,000 patients currently hospitalised with coronavirus, is increasing pressure on the healthcare system.
Málaga is currently the province with the highest incidence rate in Andalusia, as well as having the largest number of outbreaks and hospitalisations, leading to several hospitals in the capital of the province experiencing “complicated situations”, which are made worse by the staff shortage during the summer months.
Many doctors and other health professionals take their, well-deserved, holidays during the months of July and August, increasing the pressure on the already strained staff.
All of these circumstances mean that non-cancerous operating rooms are being closed and some wards are being relocated and evicted to make room for Covid patients.
Representatives from SMM also indicated that beds for Covid patients and Intermediate Respiratory Care Units (IRCU) are being set up in other vital wards, such as resuscitation wards.
SMM spoke about the situation mentioning an excessive workload for an already “poorly reinforced” workforce, who don’t receive “any breaks or financial compensation”.
“Medical staff are being punished both by the pandemic and by their own government”, the representatives added.
