Mar Menor beaches prepare for Easter with swimmer safety system
Buoys will be installed on all the Mar Menor beaches to warn swimmers of boats and jet skis

While massive clean-up operations are still underway on most beaches in southern Spain following the recent March storms, the Mar Menor is gearing up for a packed Easter and readying its waters to welcome thousands of bathers. Just like last year, buoys will be positioned in the water to ensure swimmers are kept away from danger.
Work on installing the safety systems began on March 17 and the work should be finished well in time for Holy Week. The beacons in the waters of Los Alcázares, San Pedro del Pinatar and Cartagena will remain in place for eight months, while the buoys in San Javier stay put all year round and only need a little maintenance this month.
The beacons on the other beaches will also undergo regular checks and repairs throughout the spring and summer until they’re removed a put into storage in November.
At a cost of €413,000 euros, these safety markers will be installed on around 60 Mar Menor shores, stretching along 40 kilometres of coastline.
The purpose of this beaconing system is to protect swimmers from potential risks caused by recreational boats. The buoys also mark the entry and exit areas for small vessels like jet skis and kayaks using yellow beacons of various sizes, depending on their location.
The Ministry of the Environment has also confirmed that it will continue replacing the concrete dams (blocks weighing up to 90 kilos) with biotopes, ecological structures designed to promote the growth of marine flora and fauna and which, over time, become small reefs.
The biotopes are permanently installed on the seabed and incorporate an intermediate buoy system that prevents the excess chain from damaging the seabed.
