ARCHIVED - Marbella council increases aid to local Alzheimer’s association
Marbella council is putting aside nearly €90,000 to support two local charities.
Following an increase in the number of people being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, Marbella council has nearly doubled the amount of funding it is giving to the local Association of Relatives and Alzheimer’s Patients (AFA).
The group, which offers a day centre to help care for both Alzheimer’s patients and their families, will this year receive €47,000 compared to the €26,500 the council offered the association last year.
Marbella council is also this year giving €41,000 to Marbella Voluntaria, an association which helps elderly people who are living alone and which has also been helping to vaccinate the elderly in Marbella.
The organisation explained it will use the funding to hire a community nurse, as well as to extend the hours of existing workers.
The funding comes as part of a more than €2 million budget put together by Marbella council to support local charities many of which have struggled during the pandemic.
The council is also rolling out several plans to improve services for locals as well as to attract tourists to the municipality after Marbella’s busy tourism sector took a major hit during the last year.
One of the plans, to upgrade the Elena Benitez pavilion, which is used to host several national competitions, is currently underway, while a planned Restaurant Week to highlight Marbella’s reastaurants will take place later in June.
