May 8-September 10 Pablo Picasso sculpture exhibition in Malaga
Discover a lesser-known aspect of Picasso’s work this summer at the Malaga Picasso museum
The exhibition ‘Picasso Sculptor. Matter and Body’ is now on display at the Museo Picasso Malaga museum, and is the first major exhibition in Spain devoted to this facet of Picasso’s art – his sculptures – since (most of the time) more attention is paid to his paintings.
Starting from Monday May 8, the exhibition will remain at Malaga’s Picasso museum until Sunday September 10, 2023. After that, it will go to the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in autumn.
This exhibition forms part of the international programme ‘Picasso Celebration 1973-2023’, carried out with the support of the Musée national Picasso-Paris and the Spanish National Commission as part of the commemorative events for the 50th anniversary of the artist’s death.
The exhibition of Picasso’s sculptures, which focuses on the artist’s curiosity for the female form and its movements, takes the visitor through different phases and materials that represent the experiences and the context in which they were made, highlighting some works such as ‘Head of a Woman (Fernande)’ and ‘Guitar’, as well as others that are less cheerful and make direct reference to the wars that the artist lived through.
“There was a time when it was not possible to cast metals because of the war, so he decided to cast some of his sculptures to make new ones,” said the curator of the exhibition, highlighting the artist’s versatility in the use of unusual materials for his sculptures: “It is not classical sculpture. He was a great inventor.”
In the last 20 years that the Picasso Museum in Malaga has been open, approximately 1,500 works by the Spanish artist have been displayed and around 9 million visitors gone to see them.
