ARCHIVED - Moderna and Pfizer vaccines will require third dose to ensure immunity against Covid-19
The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines both require a third jab several months after the first one to boost immunity
The French pharmaceutical company Moderna has announced that their vaccine will require a third dose eight months after the first one in order to be fully effective against coronavirus.
A representative from Moderna has stated that the immunity from the SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) vaccine lasts between one and three years, but new variants of the virus could affect the efficacy of the vaccine.
The company proposes administering a third jab of the Moderna vaccine to those who are in at risk groups at the end of the summer, especially those who live in care homes and received their first dose at the beginning of the year. They also added that giving a booster to all adults, even young adults, would protect vulnerable unvaccinated people.
This recent announcement makes Moderna the second pharmaceutical company to have stated that a third dose of their vaccine is required to ensure immunity, after Pfizer-BioNTech made the same statement at the end of April.
A representative from the German company BioNTech, who collaborated with the American Pfizer company to make the vaccine, have said that those who receive the Pfizer vaccine will need a third dose nine months after the second one to ensure protection against Covid.
The representative also said that their data shows that the immunity granted by the Pfizer vaccine drops from 95 per cent to 91 per cent in the first six months after the jab, which is why a third dose is necessary to bring the protection level back up to around 100 per cent.
