ARCHIVED - More deaths in one day than in the whole 6th wave: Andalusia Covid update January 25
A fall in death rates and hospital admissions usually follow ten days after infection rates drop, so any day now

14-day incidence rate in Andalucía since March 2020
The region of Andalucía unfortunately had 39 fatalities in the last 24 hours due to Covid-19, the highest figure in this entire sixth wave, showing that things are far from okay despite the falling number of infections and incidence rate.
The Omicron variant, which now accounts for almost three-quarters of all Covid cases in Europe, is generally seen as less lethal and serious than previous strains of coronavirus, but the death rate in Andalucía is an indication that it still pays to exercise caution by wearing a facemask and getting vaccinated.
New infections
Andalucía recorded a total of 6,370 Covid-19 coronavirus infections on Tuesday January 25, 3,433 fewer than on Tuesday last week and 2,567 fewer than this Sunday and Monday.
These new infections are the lowest figure in the whole of the previous week, after the 8,937 infections on Monday (corresponding to 48 hours), the 12,928 on Saturday, the 7,625 on Friday, the 17,548 on Thursday (the highest figure of the pandemic), the 7,416 on Wednesday and the 9,703 on Tuesday.
Cumulative incidence rate
The incidence rate has fallen 71 points to 1,316 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days, 135 points less than a week ago.
Hospitalisations
While infection rates are going down, there are still over 2,000 people in hospital with Covid, 10% of them in the ICU. The authorities are confident, though, that hospitalisations and death rates will soon begin to follow the course of the cumulative incidence rate.
The Andalusian Minister of Health and Families, Jesús Aguirre, has pointed out that in previous waves the “cumulative incidence usually drops, and after a week or ten days the hospital pressure begins to fall” which is why he has indicated that he is confident that “in a few days” this “drop in cumulative incidence will be reflected in a drop in hospital pressure”.
Deaths
In the last day, 39 people died, 14 more than the previous day, ten more than a week ago and the highest number of the sixth wave of the pandemic.
Vaccinations
In Andalucía, 83% of people over 5 years of age – 7,025,255 people – have been fully vaccinated and 88.5% – 7,491,573 people – have had their first shot.
