Murcia calls in drones and a helicopter to tackle tiger mosquitoes
Murcia City Council will begin to spray public ponds, flood plains and scupers
Murcia City Council has just begun its annual treatment campaign against the tiger mosquito and this year they’ve called in the help of 10 technicians who will spray the irritating insects with manual cannons mounted on vehicles, insecticide backpacks and nebulisers.
These experts will also set traps in some of the best known breeding grounds to eradicate the insects.
As a novelty this spring, Murcia has enlisted the aid of four drones and a helicopter. The helicopter and two of the drones will be used to track any possible sources of infestation in the municipality, while the remaining devices will allow the technicians to spray any difficult to access areas.
The City Council has called for citizen collaboration so that, if any mosquito swarm is detected, the administration is informed through the email ‘plagas@ayto-murcia.es’.
Concerned citizens can also contact the Council via the ‘Plagas Murcia’ mobile app or the Municipal Boards. Dedicated staff are standing by so that any infestations should be tackled within 48 hours, or 12 hours in very urgent cases.
According to the data provided by the City Council, in 2023, 481 notices were received about mosquito outbreaks, although only 35% of them, about 170, were classed as really problematic infestations.
During this campaign, the local government has confirmed that it will focus spraying on public spaces such as municipal ponds, flooded areas and scuppers.
At home, the best way to reduce the mosquito population is to eliminate any standing water in gardens or on balconies and terraces.
Regularly inspect garden areas for any pooled or accumulating liquid, such as flowerpot saucers, buckets, clogged gutters, birdbaths and pet bowls. Mosquitoes require standing water to breed, so removing these sources significantly reduces populations.
