A prison warden working at the Sangonera la Verde penitentiary centre has experienced his own type of rough justice on Thursday February 3 as a Murcian court ordered his incarceration after he was found guilty of defrauding the inmates he was guarding.

The judge heard that the prison official swindled large sums of money out of prisoners by promising that he would make profitable business investments on their behalf.

The newest inmate was also accused of giving preferential treatment to prisoners who paid for the privilege, for which the court has applied charges of bribery, fraud and belonging to a criminal organisation.

Two other arrests were made as part of the operation and both of those detained testified against the prison officer on Wednesday evening: an official from the Tax Agency who allegedly collaborated in the plot and a businessman, who were both released with charges.

The morning of the trial, the judge ordered the release of three other detainees, among whom was José Antonio Fernández Llado, the director general of Highways in Murcia. He has been cleared of all charges that relate to falsifying documents in order to evade debt with the Treasury.
