One killed in Redován fireworks factory explosion
The explosion could be heard for miles around

An explosion at the Pirotecnia Ferrández fireworks factory in Redován, near Orihuela town and Callosa de Segura, has taken the life of one man and prompted the local town hall to declare a day’s official mourning.
The explosion took place at around 9am on Thursday August 28 in a shed on the factory grounds, and the loud explosion could be heard for miles around.
The facilities are located next to the Sierra, which contributed to amplifying the sound of the explosion, which could also be heard by many drivers travelling on the N-340 road at the time.
A great column of smoke went up, and firefighters were on the scene as soon as they could get there to put out the flames, but not before one man had died.
The deceased is Manuel Ferrández Ruiz, aged 58, who was a partner in the company and a member of a long line of pyrotechnicians.
Pirotecnia Ferrández is a fourth-generation family business with over 130 years of history, and is a highly regarded company both in the local community and in the wider Valencian Community.
For decades, they have participated in providing fireworks for major fiestas and events, which are an essential part of the culture in places such as Valencia and Alicante.
In the fireworks and mascletàs competitions of the Hogueras de San Juan de Alicante, for example, the Ferrández family won in both 2022 and 2023.
The Mayor of Redován announced a day of mourning for this Friday 29.
