ARCHIVED - Seville airport opens new No Schengen departures area
The state-of-the-art international departures area was inaugurated in Seville this week
Seville airport has completed the renovation of the north terminal on Tuesday August 30, opening the new non-Schengen international departures hall. The international arrivals area was opened on the ground floor back in November 2020.
Following several dry runs by airport staff, the departure zone was opened without a hitch and the first passengers embarked on a Vueling flight to London at 2pm.
The new non-Schengen portion of the airport has five boarding gates, with a sixth one on standby in case it is needed in the future. There are two state-of-the-art boarding bridges, one of which is fully operational while the other will open next month, and the waiting areas are equipped with work stations and charging points.
To streamline the processing of passengers, two manual passport control cabins have been set up along with a third automatic verification station that scans documents in just a few seconds.
Still to be added are a duty free and selection of restaurants, which should be up and running in the coming months.
With this work completed, the focus will shift to the remodelling of the old pre-boarding corridor of the building, the completion of the baggage hall and the installation of three more boarding bridges, as well as the addition of more shops and dining areas.
The expansion of the terminal is part of an ambitious work plan launched at Seville Airport in May 2019, which also included the raising of the runway, completed in January 2020, and improvements to the power plant, which are currently underway.
The total investment is estimated to amount to 80 million euros.
