Showers at several Costa del Sol beaches switched off for second summer to save water
A number of popular resorts in Axarquía, Andalucia, will keep foot showers running despite drought warnings

For the second consecutive summer season, several popular beaches will remain turned off due to drought decrees issued by the Andalusian regional government, which also includes a 20% reduction on the domestic supply of water.
Vélez-Málaga, Algarrobo and Rincón de la Victoria Town Halls have announced the open-air showers will stay dry on their beaches, although the foot showers are operating for the moment in the latter coastal town.
Similarly, showers on the beaches of Torrox and Nerja are working for the time being, although the mayor in the former town wants to stage a meeting with other councils to "coordinate" the approach.
Torrox Mayor Óscar Medina admitted that the situation in Axarquía is very difficult due to lengthy dry spells leading to drought, but raised concerns that not providing a shower service on beaches "could cause a lot of problems" and an inconvenience to locals and tourists.
The Chíllar river feeds Nerja and Torrox, and water levels had fallen 50% in April, so it's hoped the water-saving measure will be met with understanding by beachgoers.
Last year, there were a number of complaints, but overall, the cutting of the showers didn't cause too much of a stir.
