Solution to foul-smelling lake in Condado de Alhama to be unveiled this month
Local authorities and the Urban Entity are working to address residents’ concerns over health and environmental issues
The Entidad Urbanística of Condado de Alhama resort will present a project this month to resolve the ongoing issues with the ornamental lake in the urbanisation.
The problem, which led to official complaints to the Guardia Civil back in August, has been a source of significant distress for residents due to bad odours, fly infestations and plagues of mosquitoes.
Councillor for Town Planning of Alhama de Murcia, José Otón, confirmed that two companies have been commissioned by the urban entity to tackle the unhealthy conditions caused by the lake’s deteriorated state. In September, the Regional Ministry of Health demanded immediate action after assessing the situation.
The lake’s problems stem from a critically low water level, which left it almost stagnant during the summer months. To address the issue, desalinated water has been added to the lake since September to assist in loosening the accumulated sludge.
According to Councillor Otón, the sludge cannot be removed while dry and the ongoing water replenishment is a preparatory step before the planned clean-up.
Alhama’s Mayor, María Cánovas, reassured residents that the council is actively involved in resolving the issue, holding weekly meetings with the urban entity.
“We have repeatedly insisted on a solution that preserves the ornamental lake,” she stated.
The project’s details and timeline for implementation are expected to be revealed this month, marking a significant step towards improving living conditions in the area and restoring the lake’s role as a key feature of the urbanisation.
