Spain on high alert for new mass migrant entry into Ceuta on August 15
The Guardia Civil is closely monitoring social media calls for another mass attempt to enter the Spanish autonomous city
The Guardia Civil is keeping an eagle eye on social media following online calls for another mass attempt to enter Ceuta on August 15, with sources describing the threat as “more than just a rumour”.
Messages circulating on WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook groups, some with hundreds of thousands of members, are urging people to gather in Castillejos, Morocco, before attempting to reach Spanish territory.
Posts include messages such as, “We’ve created a group. Anyone who wants to join is welcome”, alongside the date “15/08/2026”. Others describe the date as “Our last chance” and say “Everything will be revealed that day”.
However, the Guardia Civil believes another attempt is unlikely to reach the scale of the mass entry seen last week, when around 72,000 migrants crossed into Ceuta.
“Today, surveillance is much greater than it was in July,” sources said, highlighting increased coordination with Moroccan authorities and a stronger security presence on both sides of the border.
The Ministry of the Interior has also acknowledged the possibility of another attempt.
“We will be prepared to face the situation,” sources within the department said.
More than 100 additional Guardia Civil officers are currently deployed in Ceuta and are working alongside the National Police. Army units have also remained in the city since the recent crisis and will stay “until the Ministry of the Interior deems otherwise”, according to Ministry of Defence sources.
The situation remains a source of concern for local residents. Ceuta's president, Juan José Vivas, said people were still uneasy about the prospect of another attempted entry, while government spokesperson Alejandro Ramírez said, “Obviously, after what has happened, it’s worrying.”
The Guardia Civil is calling for longer-term reinforcements, including at least 200 additional officers, improvements to the Tarajal and Benzú breakwaters and clearer written instructions for dealing with large-scale attempts to cross the border.
“This is not Ceuta’s border, it is Europe’s southern border,” officers said.
The force has also warned that the pressure may not necessarily follow the timetable being discussed, with some sources suggesting an attempt could take place a day or two earlier because of the heavy security presence expected on August 15.
The Guardia Civil is also concerned that reinforcements could eventually be withdrawn once media attention fades, leaving the city vulnerable to another attempt in the future.
