ARCHIVED - Spain says adios to indoor masks on April 19
The Ministry of Health in Spain has decided to keep indoor masks until after Easter
After weeks of speculation, the Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, has announced that the Spanish government will approve the end of mandatory mask-wearing indoors at the Council of Ministers on April 19, and as of April 20 it will no longer be obligatory to wear a facemask inside in Spain.
The Minister revealed her decision to regional leaders at the meeting of the Interterritorial Health Council on Wednesday April 6, and agreed to follow the lead of health experts in deciding whether or not masks will still be compulsory in certain areas such as public transport, hospitals and nursing homes.

Communities such as Madrid, Catalonia and the Canary Islands have been demanding the government to relax mask-wearing restrictions for weeks because the high vaccination rate has decreased the Covid incidence rate and lessened the impact of infection. While the rest of the regions preferred to defer to the opinion of the experts, the director of the Centre for the Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies caused outrage last week when he suggested that the Alert Report should favour scrapping masks before Easter.
In the end, cooler heads prevailed, and the Ministry of Health agreed to wait until after Holy Week, when great crowds are expected to converge in celebration across the country. However, Ms Darias has gone against the Alerts Report, who requested that indoor masks be left in place at least for a few days after Holy Week, instead choosing to scrap the restriction the day after Easter Monday.
