ARCHIVED - Spanish hospitals look for volunteers for Covid vaccine trials
Valencia and Andalucía are among the facilities carrying out human trials on the Spanish drug
Earlier this week the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS) announced that phase 2b clinical trials will begin on the Catalonia-developed Hipra Covid-19 vaccine, and experts are now searching for around 1,100 volunteers from across Spain to participate in the human studies.
The various clinical trials will be carried out simultaneously in a dozen Spanish hospitals, three of which are located in the country’s capital. A spokesperson from the Gregorio Marañón General University in Madrid specified that they are looking for volunteers over the age of 18 who have received both doses of the Pfizer vaccine more than 6 months before. In order to take part in the Hipra study, participants must present with no underlying health issues.
The call for volunteers has already been splashed all over social media, with the Gregorio Marañón hospital stating that they are most in need of people aged between 60 and 65 years. Other facilities such as El Clínic in Valencia, the Vall d’Hebron hospital in Barcelona and the Regional Hospital in Málaga will also take part in the trials.
If successful at this stage, Spanish pharmaceutical company Hipra hopes to begin producing 400 million doses of the jab in the coming months, which so far has proven to be very effective against coronavirus.
